A gentle agreement for all members of the Gentle Steps group (formerly Whalley Range Womens Walking Group).
To help keep this space safe, inclusive, and supportive for everyone, we ask all participants to honour the following boundaries:
Confidentiality is key
What’s shared during walks stays within the group. Please don’t repeat or share personal stories outside the space.
Respectful communication
We all carry different stories, and sometimes even kind words can land in unexpected ways. Let’s speak with warmth and care, and try to avoid offering advice unless someone asks for it. Everyone’s journey is their own, and we honour that by listening without judgment.
No pressure to share
You’re welcome to walk quietly, talk a little, or a lot, whatever feels right for you. There’s no expectation to perform or participate in any specific way.
This is a wellbeing space
We’re here to walk alongside each other with care and kindness. While we’re not trained or insured to offer professional mental health support, we can gently listen, hold space, and help signpost to services if needed.
Inclusive and affirming
This is a women-centered space that welcomes all women, including trans women and non-binary people who feel comfortable here. We celebrate diversity and ask everyone to honour each other’s identities.
No pets or children during walks
To help everyone focus on their own wellbeing, we ask that pets and children stay home.
Who can join the walking club?
This is an 18+ women-centered wellbeing space that’s inclusive of all women, including trans women and non-binary people who feel comfortable in a women’s group.
Do I need to book in advance?
Nope! Just turn up. If we’re hosting through Eventbrite, you’re welcome to register to help us plan numbers.
Is there a cost to join?
No cost at all, just bring yourself. If you’d like to join for coffee afterwards, bring a bit of money for that.
How long is the walk?
Roughly 45 mins to an hour, depending on pace and the group’s mood.
What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and a bottle of water. That’s it!
Is the walk accessible?
Yes , we stick to paved paths in Alexandra Park which are flat and accessible. Let us know if you have any access needs.
Can I bring a friend?
Absolutely. Just make sure they feel comfortable in a women-centered wellbeing space.
Can I bring pets or children?
To keep the space calm and focused, we kindly ask that pets and children stay home so participants can take time for themselves.
Is this a mental health support group?
No, we are not trained or insured to provide professional or crisis support. This is a gentle wellbeing space to connect, share lived experiences, and support one another informally. We’re happy to signpost to services if needed.
What is the status of the group?
We’re currently a small constituted charity with three trustees. This helps us stay community-led while building a safe and sustainable space for women’s wellbeing.
Is there any clinical oversight or supervision?
Yes — Tayba Azim provides clinical supervision and oversees the running of the group. This helps ensure the space remains safe, supportive, and well-held for everyone involved.
Do you have safeguarding policies in place?
We do. We’re partnered with Friends of Alexandra Park and follow a safeguarding escalation policy for both adults and children. If any concerns arise, we’ll respond with care and in line with these policies.
What if I’m shy or anxious?
That’s completely okay. Come as you are, no pressure to talk or perform. You’re welcome to just walk and be. Feel free to contact the organiser beforehand.
Are there toilets available?
Yes – the public toilets near the park café will be open during the walk.
Who runs the group?
Nice to meet you! I’m Tanya I started this group as a gentle, inclusive space for women to connect and care for their wellbeing together.
